In 1937 Nat “King” Cole formed his first trio. Legend has it the band was supposed to be a quartet but the drummer failed to turn up. Whether this is true or not, the resulting trio of bass, guitar and piano was an instant success; it provides the ability to play more softly and the combination of two harmony instruments enables the to creation of unique musical textures and possibilities – the format was used for many years by legendary pianist Oscar Peterson.
